Vernon Merle
Collins
August 29, 1932 – September 7, 2024
Vernon Merle Collins was called home to the Lord on Saturday, September 7, 2024.
Vernon was born at his family home on the Peace River in Fort Winder and was a lifelong resident of Fort Ogden, Florida. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Vera and Leslie Collins, brother, Frank Collins, and sister, Wanda Watts. He is survived by his beloved wife Faye Collins, Fort Ogden, Florida, and his four daughters, Deborah (Don) Robertson in Englewood, Florida, Charlotte (Ed) Epperly in Franklin, North Carolina, Verna Collins in Franklin, North Carolina, and Elizabeth Collins (Jason) in Port Charlotte, Florida. He also leaves five grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandsons, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that became family.
Vernon proudly served in the National Guard and the U.S. Air Force. Upon his return home, he married his sweetheart, Faye Lanier of Fort Ogden. He began a long career working for General Development Corporation (later Atlantic Gulf Communities). As their General Contractor, he oversaw new home construction all over the state of Florida and parts of Tennessee. He retired as their company Vice President of Purchasing.
Aside from his family that he cherished, Vernon also loved fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, his church and his numerous friends. Some called him by his childhood family nickname, "Bunk", some referred to him as "the Mayor of Fort Ogden", but everyone called him friend. His presence touched the hearts of many and he will truly be missed.
