Ralph Glenn Ames, beloved husband, father and grandfather died Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the age of ninety-two. Born in Adams County, OH, he was one of seven boys and a twin. He graduated from Kingman High School in Clinton County, OH. where he played basketball and baseball. He attended the Univ. of Wisconsin. During World War II, he served our country in the US Army Signal Corps in North Africa and Italy and received the Purple Heart. He moved his family to Florida in 1954 and to Arcadia in 1957. A lover of agriculture and animals, he managed Foster Farms Prairie Creek Ranch, Harley Watson Ranch, and worked at Sorrells Brothers Fruit Company, then retired from Life Services Okeechobee in 1982. Ralph was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and Chairman of the Official Board. He was a member of the Masons, Kiwanis and past President of the Farm Bureau. His greatest joy was gardening at his mountain home in Murphy, NC where he spent every summer since he retired and where he attended Peachtree United Methodist church. Ralph loved hunting, fishing, and campfire singing with family. Ralph deeply loved his family and is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Sarah Hartsock Ames of Arcadia, FL.; two sons, Edwin Alan (Brenda) Ames of Fellsmere, FL and Richard Thomas (Babs) Ames of Arcadia, FL.; one daughter, Karen A. (Richard) Johnson of Lakeland, FL., six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; Oscar W. and Daisy Marie Jackson Ames, six brothers and one sister. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Ralph s life will be Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11:00AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 304 W. Oak St., Arcadia with Rev. Jim Wade and Rev. Ginny Inman officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Tidewell Hospice, 919 N. Arcadia Ave., Arcadia, FL. 34266 or Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund.
