Quitmon Brown, age 85, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011 in Arcadia, FL. He was born in Slocomb, AL, October 27, 1925, moving to Arcadia with his parents at the age of 6 weeks. He retired from DeSoto County Government, having given 40 years of faithful service as the DeSoto Co. Tax Collector. Quitmon was a graduate of DeSoto Co. High School, Class of 1943, while in high school; He was a member of the National Honor Society and FFA. He was a graduate of Stetson University, DeLand, FL, receiving a Bachelors Degree in Science and Business. He worked as Head Bookkeeper for Mattison Ford Co. in Arcadia. Quitmon threw his hat into the political arena, running for the office of Tax Collector. Though unsuccessful in his first attempt, he tried again when the office was up for election, and was successful in winning the election. He remained the Tax Collector for the next forty years. He was former president of the Tax Collectors Association of FL, serving as a member of the Board of Directors for many years. He was past president of the Arcadia Rotary Club. He also served as the Treasurer for the American Legion for several years. Quitmon was a veteran of World War II, serving honorably with the US Army Air Corp. He enjoyed horseback riding; he was a member of the Arcadia Saddle Club, where he served as Treasurer and the Quadrille for more than 35 years. He was a faithful member of Arcadia First Baptist Church, where he served as Head Usher for several years. Survivors are his beloved wife, Adell Boyd Brown, Arcadia, FL, two daughters, Mary A. (David) Bachert and Kathryn A. Bellflower both of Arcadia, FL, three grandchildren, Michael Bellflower, Laci Bachert, and Joshua Bachert. Quitmon is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Alec and Mary Alice Wilks Brown, six sisters, Ruth, Esther, Johnnie, Ethel, Eva, and Audra, and two brothers, Roy and Elma. Visitation will be from 1:00PM until 2:00PM, Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Arcadia First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM at the church. Military honors and burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
