Obituary

Opal E. Coker,age 86, passed away at home Thursday, September 2, 2010 surrounded by her family in Arcadia, FL. She fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer not once but twice before finally succumbing. She was the loving heart of her family and will be missed greatly by all that knew her. Opal was a lifelong resident of Arcadia, Fl. She was born August 21, 1924 to the late Henry L. and Myrtle Hardin Vick. Opal retired from the state of FL as a Social Worker. She had a compassion for helping the elderly, seeing that they were not forgotten at a time when they needed a helping hand. Opal attended DeSoto High School where she was a member of the Bulldog's basketball team. Opal was a member of the Arcadia Quilting Club, the American Cancer Society, the Red cross, Salvation Army, Ladies Auxillary of the V. F. W. Peace River Post 2824, Elks Womens Lodge 1524, Arcadia, FL, the Business and Professional Womens Society. She enjoyed league bowling in her younger years. She also campaigned for Arcadia City Council. Opal was a lifelong Christian and of the Baptist faith. Opal is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Leon Coker; a son Steven (Terri) Coker, Dorr, MI.; two daughters, Lorelei Jackson, Arcadia and Leah (Rodney) Overman, Longview, TX. Opal also has a sister Bernice Vick Skeckowski, Eastchester, NY, a son-in-law David Noel, Indianola, Iowa; and ten grandchildren; Joseph (Jennifer) Redner and Teresa (Mike) Maida both of Tampa, FL; Greg Overman and Lara Overman both of Longview, Tx Daniel (Bethany) Overman, Pearland, TX, Susan Cannon, Arcadia and Arthur Kersey, Myakka City, Fl, Brad and Kim, Michigan, Reyline, Tampa ten great grand children and 2 great great grandchild. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving daughter, Sheila Noel. Visitation will be held from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Sunday evening, September 5, 2010 from Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home chapel, 50 No. Hillsborough Avenue, Arcadia, FL Funeral services will be at 11:00AM Monday, September 6, 2010 at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Ted Land officiating.
