Odessia Lee
Hall
July 18, 1941 – February 3, 2025
Odessia Lee Hall, age 83, of Arcadia, Florida went to her new home in glory on Monday, February 3rd, 2025, peacefully, with loved ones by her side. Born on July 18th, 1941 in Kissimmee, FL to the late Joel Elgin & Mildred Elgin.
She married the love of her life, Charles Hall, Sr., on March 6th, 1961; moving and traveling to many places as they raised their three children then eventually settling in Arcadia, FL in 1978. Charles and Odessia later spent 15 years residing in Camp Hill, Alabama, where they gained friends that felt much like family.
Odessia, better known as "Nanny", will be remembered most for her love of feeding people. She had an exceptional way of creating a feast out of nothing. She met no stranger and rarely did her table or kitchen ever stay empty. She raised and nurtured so many more than just her own; everyone was her "baby", that was just her way.
Nanny will always hold the title of the best biscuit and cornbread maker we know. None of us can quite make them like her -accurate measurements weren't worth the fuss. She was also the master of pepper steaks, Sunday roasts, beans, rice and could fry up fish with from-scratch hush puppies that melt in your mouth. Being married to an outdoorsman, she loved being outdoors when she wasn't in the kitchen. She had the patience of a saint, especially when it came time to fix all of Papaw's catches and hunts or feed all the people he invited over without telling her. She was the epitome of grace and extended genuine hospitality towards all who knew her.
Her bright smile and infectious positivity brought so much light and precious memories. She loved the Lord with all her heart. As a notorious early-riser, Nanny liked to watch the sunrise, listen to the birds, and watch for the deer and butterflies. She was a faithful prayer warrior and always kept a well-read and well-worn Bible beside her. She set an incredible example of faith for all of us.
She loved to read, serve at her church, and be "on the go" as much as we would let her! She rarely sat idle and was always willing to jump in and help wherever and whenever she could, humming to the tune of her favorite hymns as she worked. Even though she never claimed she had favorites, it was evident that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were among her greatest treasures. She never stopped talking about them!
Odessia is survived by her son Charlie D. (Linda) Hall Jr. of Arcadia FL, daughters Pamela Hall (Randy) of Kingston, Georgia, and Tara (Joseph) Willis of Arcadia, FL, sister Carroll Scott of Arcadia, FL, brother Captain Fulton Elgin of Jacksonville, FL, 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Sandra Taylor and brother Roy Elgin.
If there was ever a more perfect example of who Odessia was, it can be found in the passages of Proverbs
31. It's not an easy feat to embody every virtue of a Proverbs 31 woman, but in our eyes, Nanny does. She is virtuous and capable, more precious than rubies. Trustworthy, enriching lives, bringing good and never harm all the days of her life. She makes, creates, regularly rising early to care for her household with joy. She is energetic, strong, and a hard worker. Her hands are busy; she extends a helping hand to the poor and open arms to the needy. She's resourceful and supports her husband. She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs with no fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise and kind. She remembers her family as her husband praises her and her children bless her.
Nanny: "There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpassed them all! Charm is deceptive, beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised."
