Obituary

Joseph L. Varnadore, age 89, passed away Monday, November 28, 2022, in Arcadia, Florida.  Joe was born December 3, 1932, in Hazlehurst, Georgia to the late Joseph Vernice and Mildred Reynolds Varnadore.

Joe proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.  Because community service was key for Joe, he made his subsequent careers serving the people of Florida and DeSoto County.  He began as a Florida Highway Patrol Officer for 30 years, then as the Sheriff of DeSoto County from 1985-1992.  After retiring from law enforcement Joe continued his efforts as a DeSoto County Commissioner.

Joe lived a full life traveling with his wife, Margaret, fishing, spending time with family and friends.  His words of wisdom and history and political storytelling abilities will be missed.

He was a "social butterfly" and community advocate.  Joe was a member of the Elks and Moose Clubs, Masonic Lodge, Florida Retired Highway Patrol Officers Association, the American Legion, Florida Sheriff's Association, and the DeSoto County Fair Association.

Joe is survived by daughter-in-law Cindi Varnadore, son-in-law Patrick Murphy, stepdaughters Deborah (Jeff) Faircloth, and Daphnea Hill, stepsons Joseph (Lori) DeLoach and Rodney (Donna) DeLoach all of Arcadia, Florida. He also is also survived by sisters Vivian V. Knispel and Sally Marie Hooks. Joe was also blessed to have 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by wife Margaret Christine Varnadore, and Josephine Douglas Varnadore mother of daughter Theresa Ann Murphy, sons J.L. Varnadore, Jr. and Edward L. Varnadore, brother William E. Varnadore, son-in-law Randy Hill, granddaughter Staci Jo DeLoach and his parents Joseph Vernice and Mildred Reynolds Varnadore.

Services for friends and family to share in Joe's celebration of life will be held Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Calvary Baptist Church, Arcadia, Florida.  Visitation at 2:00 PM.  The funeral service will commence at 3:00PM with Reverend Matt Roberts officiating.  Burial will follow at Joshua Creek Cemetery.  The United States Marine Corps and the DeSoto County Honor Guard will render military honors at the graveside.
