John James
Davis
February 16, 1937 – February 16, 1937
John James Davis, 85, passed away on February 26, 2022, in Port Charlotte, Florida. He and his twin brother, David, were born in Greenville, South Carolina, on February 16, 1937, to Ellen Louise Barrett and Rogan C. Davis. John's mother unfortunately passed away weeks after their birth, and John was raised primarily by his various family members.
John joined the Navy with his twin brother when they were 15 years old to fight in the Korean War in 1952. John was a gifted storyteller and pridefully recalled his time on the USS Iowa fighting for his country. As he put it, he sailed around the world on the Navy's dime and loved every second of it. His time in the Navy would shape the rest of his life as he would go on to honor hard work, dedication, and the USA. After the Navy, John was honorably discharged and lived in the Florida Keys near his brother. He gladly recalled stories of painting the Seven-mile bridge from Marathon to Big Pine Key, Florida.
John was preceded in death by various siblings, family members, and aunts and uncles. He was survived in death by his brother, many loving family members, his only daughter and pride and joy, Sharon Davis Coleman of New Market, Maryland and grandchildren Lily and Laurel Sutherin.
Despite never finishing high school to enter the Navy, John triumphed to become a business owner, talented printer and owned his own shop in Naples, Florida. He was the epitome of a southern gentleman and always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He was an avid collector of many things such as coins, fossils, and what nots. He had the uncanny ability to find things wherever he went. He enjoyed canoeing and camping on the Peace River in Florida and spending time with his family. His patriotism, smile, and welcoming demeanor will forever be missed and cherished.
During his later years, John fearlessly battled Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Despite his illness, he shared his stories and put smiles on everybody's face. The family would like to express a special thank you to his dedicated healthcare workers and their endless ability to assist.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the National Alzheimer's Association and prayers for our Navy and the fight for freedom everywhere.
