John Howard Churchwell, passed away at the age of 91 on Monday, March 4, 2024 in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was born February 14, 1933 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Lee Francis Churchwell and Beatrice Tetters. He has lived in Punta Gorda since 2010, he moved from Brownwood, Texas. He attended the Arcadia First Church of the Nazarene and was proud of his military service with the Air Force.

He loved telling others about his experiences in the Air Force. John was an air rescue pilot, flying the HU16 and during his service time he served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Also, a pilot instructor in a B-25 aircraft. After his service time, John retired from National Steel Great Lakes Division in Ecorse, Michigan. After his retirement he enjoyed working on a Horse Farm in Venice, Florida. He enjoyed hunting as a young man, home repairs, family outings and his dogs.

John is survived by his loving wife, Wrayina Churchwell and sister Joyce Mask and husband Carey of Onsted, Michigan, sons, Gary Churchwell and wife Liz from Camden, Michigan; James Churchwell and wife Cyndi from Parma, Michigan; Keith Churchwell from Hong Kong; Robert Churchwell and wife MaryAnn from Canton, Michigan; and daughter Kimberly Corbett from Punta Gorda, Florida, ten grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be March 11, 2024, at Ponger Kays Grady Chapel at 50 N. Hillsborough Ave. in Arcadia, Florida from 6-7pm. Service will be at Sarasota National Cemetery on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 11:00 am.
