Obituary

Janis (Jan) Porch, age 91 of Arcadia, Florida passed away 2/5/2023 in Arcadia. She was born November 23, 1931, to Troy and Jimmie (Dixon) Zeigler and was a lifelong resident of Arcadia.

Jan graduated from Desoto County High School with the class of 1949 and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she served on several Committees through the years. She was a substitute school bus driver for a while, then worked in the office of Sarasota Memorial Hospital when it was still the old wooden building with only seventeen inside phone lines. Later she was employed with a tobacco company in Connecticut as a supervisor during the summers where the tobacco leaves were prepared for drying and some of the special leaves were used as outer wrappers for Dutch Master cigars. Jan really enjoyed many summers in the New England states and her many friends there.

Jan enjoyed many talents, including oil painting, wood working, building things, sewing, traveling and gardening where she spent many hours taking care of her yard and beautiful flowers. She met her husband to be, John Frederick Porch from Alexander City, Alabama in the early part of 1958 at Badcock Furniture store where she and her mother were shopping for a porch swing. He could not sell them a swing but called her a couple days later and they started dating. They were married October 26, 1958, and enjoyed the next 50 years together until his death, October 18, 2008.

John retired from the U.S. Postal service and they spent their vacations traveling and sightseeing in every state except Alaska. Jan often commented – she and her mother were shopping for a porch swing and she came out with the porch.

Jan is survived by one niece, Jana (Robert) Powell, of Dublin, Georgia, one nephew, Arthur (Garnette) Coulter of Dublin, Georgia. Two great nephews, five great nieces and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Jimmie Zeigler, her husband, John F. Porch, her sister Revene and her husband (Charlie) Scott, sister Ortez and her husband (Bill) Coulter and one niece, Donna Misenheimer and one nephew, Doyle Scott.
