James Winburn Cherry, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 5, 2012 in Wauchula. He was born April 15, 1923 in Brownsville, Tennessee and moved to Limestone in the early 1930 s with his family from Tampa, FL before moving to Wauchula in the 1940 s. James was of the Methodist faith, serving actively as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wauchula for a number of years. J.W., or J, as he was known, will be remembered as a very loving and hard working husband, father and grandfather. He was a building contractor and carpenter for many years. J. W. loved the land, and enjoyed farming, working in his garden, and taking care of his cows. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret Louise Bryan Cherry of Wauchula; two daughters, Ann (Sam) Thompson of St. Augustine, FL., and Leah (Allen) Altvater of Lake Placid, FL.; and three grandchildren, Andrew Altvater, Katie Altvater and Graceanna Thompson. James was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Mansel Cherry and Arsena Winburn Cherry, and brother Louis M. Cherry, Jr. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012 from 1:00PM until 2:00PM at the First United Methodist Church, 207 N 7th Ave., Wauchula. Funeral Services will follow the visitation at 2:00PM at the church with Rev. Danielle Upton and Rev. Sam Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Wauchula City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Florida United Methodist Children s Home, or to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
