George L
Benda, Jr.
July 9, 1940 – January 30, 2026
George L. Benda, Jr., of Arcadia, FL, formerly of Auburn, NY, born July 9, 1940, he passed away after a brief illness on January 30, 2026, at Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL with family by his side. He had been married to his beloved wife, Audrey for 54 years, and in God's timing, they were taken within hours of one another on the same day.
George was the son of George Benda Sr. and Rose Benda. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters-in-law, Iva Bankart and Cheryl Benda; and brothers in law, Raymond, Glenn, Minard, Norman and Lynn Herrington.
He is survived by his brother, Ronald Benda, of Moravia; sisters: Geraldine (James) Sincerbeaux of Auburn, and Barbara Quigley of FL; sisters in law, Robin Herrington and Patty Herrington of Port Byron; and many nieces and nephews. He graduated high School in 1958 and began his career at New Process Gear in Syracuse, where he worked until his retirement.
In their early years, George and Audrey shared a lovely home on Owasco Lake in Auburn – a place that became the heart of family gatherings. He loved boating, swimming, and water skiing, but more than anything, he loved sharing those moments. Welcoming family and friends into his world brought him his greatest joy. While living in Auburn, George served as a volunteer fireman and was a life member of Fleming Fire Dept #1. He was also a member of the SK American Legion Post #1324 and the Moose Club, Post #1327.
Later in life, George and Audrey moved permanently to Arcadia, FL. where they embraced retirement together. They enjoyed the many activities and friendships of their community, especially golfing and cruising around on their golf cart. George quickly became the dependable neighbor that others could count on. He remained active right up until the day before his final hospital stay, spending the afternoon playing Bingo with friends.
Bowling remained a life-long passion, one he pursued from his teenage years through age 84. Achieving a Masters title and membership in the elite 700 club were not just athletic accomplishments – they reflected his dedication and focus. Whether cutting through the water on skis, or rolling a strike at the lanes, George showed us that life is best lived by staying active, helping others, and keeping the door open to those you love. Though he has set his bowling ball down, his spirit will forever remain in the "700 Club" of our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Arcadia, FL at the DeSoto Village Clubhouse on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Noon. The DeSoto Village Mobile Home Park is located at 4810 NW Highway 72, Arcadia, FL 34266
