Gene Larue Thompson, 84, passed away at home July 4, 2024, after a battle with lung cancer. He was born April 10, 1940 in Fort Myers, FL. Gene is survived by his wife of 8 years, Ann; a son Gene L. Thompson II (William Cavins) Winter Park, a stepson Brent Harper of New York City, a step grandson Zachary (Erica) Cavins, a step granddaughter Suzannah (Nicholas) Seibert, Port Charlotte, six step great grandchildren, a nephew, Bernie (Kim), and Family in Ft. Myers and Tampa. He is predeceased by his first wife Baerbel E. Notzke Thompson, his parents Janie and Bernie Thompson, and his brother Bernie Lee Thompson II.
Gene was a Methodist and was a member of Trinity Methodist in Arcadia Florida.
He attended Memorial Grammar School, Westside Junior High and DeSoto High School in Arcadia where he graduated in 1958
As a youngster he delivered newspapers along an 8 mile route and helped around Thompson Motor Parts with parents. In high school he developed an interest in music. He eventually became the Drum Major for the band. After High School he went to work for the Arcadia Radio Station. His interest in radio led to another position with a larger station in Punta Gorda.
In 1962, Gene enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served for 21 years retiring on 1983. His tours of duty took him to numerous places overseas including American Samoa, the Philippines, and two tours in Germany. His duty stations in the United Stares included Colorado, Louisiana, Virginia, and Florida. His service was recognized with the Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation w/1 Olive Leaf Cluster, AF Good Conduct Medal w/6 olive leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, NCO Professional Military Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon w/4 olive leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and AF Outstanding Unit Award w/8 devices.
Upon his retirement, Gene worked at KMart for 10 years before becoming a Clerk of the Court in Charlotte County for 10 years.
Gene was a founding member of the Sanibel Naturist Society serving in various offices including President and Vice President.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends while boating and spending time at Oyspits, the Thompson Family beach house on Little Gasparilla Island. He particularly enjoyed teaching people the Farkle Dice game.
Visitation will be Saturday July 13, 2024 from 0930-11am at Trinity United Methodist Church of Arcadia, Funeral Service will start at 11am, with Reverend Louie Mabrey officiating and the burial following with Air Force Honor Guard rendering Military Honors at Oak Ridge.
