Emel "Mel"
Hazen
June 7, 1948 – August 6, 2023
Emel "Mel" Hazen, 75, of Arcadia, passed away peacefully on August 6th 2023, after a long and difficult battle against his declining health. He spent his last days in the company of loved ones, and will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, family, and friends.
Mel was born June 7th, 1948, in Panama, and grew up in Southwest Florida, with his beloved parents Leonard and Elida Hazen. He proudly served as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, and later became a Staff Sergeant and Drill Instructor on Paris Island, where he specialized as a sharpshooter. In 1980, he went to work for Len Hazen Painters, and was part of many large-scale projects, including the Tampa Skyway Bridge. Mel moved on to build his own successful bridgework company, Hazen Grinding Grooving, which he ran until he retired in 2014. He met the love of his life, Angela, by coincidence in Arcadia, and instantly swept her off her feet. In storybook fashion, they eloped shortly after on Valentine's Day, and remained inseparable until the moment he passed. Mel will be remembered for his love of fishing, boating, dancing, and riding his Harley. He enjoyed talking "serious science" with his Grandson Demitri, and his wicked sense of humor will not be forgotten.
Mel will be fondly remembered by his wife, Angela, Daughter and Son- in -Law, Cassandra and Jason Bazinet, and his Grandson Demitri. He will remain in the hearts of his loyal and constant companions that stayed with him until the very end.
Mel is predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Elida Hazen, and his son, Eric Hazen, who passed away in 2000. Our family is grateful to know Mel is at peace with his loved ones, all of whom he loved dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral home on August 18th, 2023, in Arcadia, Florida from 4:00pm-6:00pm. There will be a brief interment of ashes to follow at the Fort Ogden Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
