Obituary

Douglas Wayne Worster, Sr., age 78, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 in Arcadia, FL. He was born August 5, 1945, in Prentiss, ME to William and Blanche (Jipson) Worster.

Douglas joined the Marine Corps at age 17. He enjoyed traveling to foreign countries and seeing the world. While stationed in Okinawa and Iwakuni, Japan, he was able to visit and experience many countries in the Pacific. Additionally, he served as a drill instructor at Parris Island and the Officer Candidate School in Quantico. He also served as a course writer for the Marine Corps Institute. After 22 years of proud service and sacrifice, he retired in 1985 as a Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9, MGySgt) which is the highest rank attainable for an enlisted Marine. As a proud U.S. Marine, Douglas never found a country that he loved more than the United States of America.

He enjoyed traveling worldwide during his retirement, cruising and island hopping the Caribbean, and had visited all 50 U.S. states several times – culminating in a cruise/land tour of Alaska in August 2023. Douglas was a "ferocious" card player and enjoyed besting his family and friends. He played horseshoes in Arcadia Village. He loved tennis. He played at the Pensacola Athletic Club in Pensacola, FL and participated in many tournaments. He established the tennis program at Arcadia Village after moving from No. Charleston, SC, in 2009. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church and served on many church committees.

He is survived by his loving wife Suzanne (Boyington) Worster; children, Rose (Richard) Thompson, of Glenburn, ME, Douglas Worster of Milford, ME, and Robin (Ed) LeBlanc, of Milford, ME; sister Cindee (Dana) Keene, of Belfast, ME. Six grandsons: Zachary (Bailey) Thompson, Nicholas Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Tyler (Jordan) LeBlanc, Brad LeBlanc, and Justin Worster, and great-grandson Noah LeBlanc. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dwight Worster, and sisters Carolyn Bartlett, Candyce Hanscom and Christine Worster.

Service is scheduled for Friday, January 26th, at 10:00am, at the Trinity Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, Arcadia, FL.

Interment is scheduled for Monday, January 29th, 2:00pm, at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
