Dorothy I. Gaskins, age 90, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in Port Charlotte, FL. She as born November 13, 1919 in Humboldt, IA and moved to Arcadia sixty-five years ago from Iowa. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Arcadia. Dorothy was a wonderful mother, grandmother and sister and will be missed by her family and friends. She graduated High School in Humboldt, IA, and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Dorothy taught Morse Code in Kansas City, Mo at the Midland Army Radio School in 1942. While there she was selected to work as an Assistant Engineer on the Manhattan Project, in Oak Ridge, TN. She served as a Girl Scout leader while her daughters were in Brownie and Girl Scouts during the 1960 s, and taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church in Arcadia for many years. She and her husband subsequently helped found Arcadia Christian Academy where she taught first grade for eleven years. Dorothy enjoyed reading particularly her Bible. She is survived by two daughters, Betty G. (Joseph) Waldron of Gainesville, FL. and Sue (John) Parker, Jr. of Summerland Key and Arcadia, FL., one son, Jerrold M. Gaskins of Arcadia, FL., two sisters, Betty (Mason) Maach of Humboldt, IA and Dolores (Willis) Lynn of Fridley, MN, seven grandchildren, Gregory and Shannon Waldron-Konik Taylor, Alora and Jerry Gaskins and John Parker, III and Jeri Ann Bennett, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Jerrold Taylor Gaskins, daughter Gail Marie, sisters Winifred Hansen and Edith Strachan. Her parents Harry M. and Mary Chumley Hansen. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia, FL.
