Obituary

DeSoto- Orgel Clyde Bramblett went home February 16, 2013. He was born December 8, 1930 in Wild Cherry, Arkansas and raised in Carrizo Springs, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force, a veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Bronze Star. An avid pilot and aviator, he held a commercial pilot certificate and earned his Airframe and Powerplant license at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute of Miami. After his Air Force service, he chose to make Miami home and worked for Eastern Airlines from 1956-1987 in various capacities, including production planning for both the L-1011 and DC-9 fleets. Clyde's business, Orgel's Orchids and Carnivorous Plants earned international respect for the protection and propagation of endangered species, relocating plants from threatened habitats to protected areas. He was affectionately know as "The Plant Man" to many school children throughout South Florida and gave lectures at schools and venues such as Fairchild Gardens, the Redland Fruit and Spice Park and many others. He won international acclaim for the award winning orchid "The Kenyan Star" and created with Bruce Bednar, by graft, many hybrids. He was a cofounder of the Eastern Airlines Orchid Club and was well known for his vast knowledge of rare plants and preservation of indigenous flora. Clyde was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Phyllis Wilson Bramblett. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Claud (Sharon) Bramblett, of Austin, Texas, daughter, Deanna (Terry) West, of Palm Beach, Florida, daughter, Marsha (Randy) Miller, of Arcadia, Florida, son, Alan (Debbie) Homestead, and ten grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Killian Pines United Methodist Church, 10755 S.W. 112 St., Miami. Viewing at 10 am, service at 11am. Donations may be made in his honor to Tidewell Hospice House. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather; He was a good man whose love of life was exceeded only by his love of family.
