Forrest D. Rice, II (Captain Jack) age 90, passed away peacefully at his ranch in Arcadia with his daughter Candy and grand-daughter Allison by his side. He is survived by his two brothers Charles Rice of Sarasota, FL. and Steven (foots)Rice of Ohio. Daughter Candy Smith of Arcadia, FL., sons Dana Rice of Portsmouth, VA., Tracy Rice of St. Petersburg, FL. and Forrest D. Rice III (Jack Rice) of Sarasota, FL. Grand-children Major Timothy Paul Biart U.S. Army, Allison Biart, Dana Rice II and Donald Rice. He was preceded by his beloved wife Patricia and son Jeffery. Captain Jack grew up in Belmont, MA and was a New England High School all American hockey all-star. With scholarship offers from Harvard, Brown, Princeton, Yale among others WWII intervened and he met his countries calling. Enrolling at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy he graduated officer school and survived multiple North Atlantic crossings helping to bring crucial supplies to the troops in Europe. After the war he became an officer on the USS Point Barrow that transferred the main stage of the Saturn five moon rocket from California to Cape Kennedy. He later became a 1st mate (chief engineer) then Master (captain) which designated any vessel any tonnage any sea. He fascinated many of us by showing how he used his sextant fixating on planets at dusk on crescent beach at his mother Dorothy Calhoun s White Sands cabanas. He also owned the Strathmore Hotel and Bar Long Island, NY and the Loading Zone, Arcadia, FL. After meeting the one true love of his life, Patty Gettings they fell in love, threw caution to the wind and eloped. They moved back to Sarasota so their kids could grow up outside all year round and enjoy the one thing every house they owned had, a swimming pool. They were avid golfers and were members of Forest Lakes Country Club and loved playing in the Friday tiger tournaments. I know it s been said many times before, but Captain Jack truly made an impact on everyone he met. A special thanks to Dr. Nathan and Captain Jack s extended family in Arcadia for always being there for him.
