Dan Carroll Shelfer, age 84 of Arcadia, Florida passed away on, Wednesday May 8, 2024, at 9:45am in his home surrounded by his family.
Dan was born on August 1, 1939, to Arthur and Martha Ella Carroll Shelfer in Arcadia, Florida. He served in the United States National Guard for 8 years. He graduated DeSoto County High School in 1958. Shortly after he married his high school sweetheart Carolyn Head Shelfer in 1959. They went on to have two children, Dan Kevin Shelfer and Duane Carey Shelfer.
Dan was of Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church Arcadia. He was a fourth-generation citrus grower and Florida native. Born and raised in Joshua Creek area in DeSoto County. Earlier in his life he was a cattle owner, cowboy, and hauled cows in a semi-truck all over the country. He also cow hunted for many years and as early as 7 years old with many old timers. Dan's talents where many, he was an accomplished welder, farmer, and rib cook. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, lobstering with his family and friends. He was a true Floridian.
Dan Carroll Shelfer is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Martha Ella Carroll Shelfer, two sisters Linda Sue Sarles and Becky Shelfer. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Head Shelfer, two children Dan Kevin Shelfer (Lynn) Duane Carey Shelfer (Tanya), sister Victoria Cuthbert (Chuck), five grandchildren Justin Shelfer (Kayla), Olivia Meador (Robert "Bo"), Caleb Shelfer (Brooke), Ashlynn Roberts (Cole), Joshua Shelfer, four great grandchildren Duke Shelfer, Baylen Roberts, Bryant Meador and Gracelen Roberts and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday May 12, 2024, from 6pm to 8pm at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home. The Service will be on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 10:00AM in the Chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home 50 N. Hillsborough Avenue, Arcadia, FL 34266 with Kenny Butts officiating. The Burial will follow at Joshua Creek Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to First Baptist Church Arcadia Florida or Tidewell Hospice. The family would also like to thank everyone who have comforted, visited, fed and prayed for them during this time.
