Obituary

Charles Olin Weaver, 93, of Arcadia, Fla., and Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009. He was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Six Mile Run, Pa. Charles lived in the Arcadia/Port Charlotte area for the past 60-plus years. He was of the Presbyterian faith, and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Arcadia. Charles' life's work was education. He obtained his master's degree from the University of Florida in Education. After graduating from college, he worked as a teacher, guidance counselor and principal, and served two and half terms as Superintendent of Schools for Desoto County, Fla. Charles loved to read, fish and travel. He served our country during World War II, and held the rank of Captain in the U.S. Air Force. Charles received the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle East Ribbon with five Battle Stars, American Campaign Medal and Meritorious Service Unit Award. He also served as past Commander with the American Legion Post K-11. Charles is survived by his wife, Dr. Marita V. Weaver of Port Charlotte; two sons, Renato (Lea) Duran of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Francisco (Racquel) Duran Jr. of Kaneohe, Hawaii; two daughters, Mercedes (Renato) Pineda of North Ridge, Calif., and Elena (Roberto) Dizon of West Hills, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Yama of Arcadia; two nieces, Susan Head and Nancy Turner; two nephews, Kent Weaver of Sarasota, Fla., and Bill Weaver of Hopewell, Pa.; numerous great nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Amanda (nee Whitney) Weaver; and eight siblings. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church of Arcadia, 209 W. Hickory St., Arcadia, with the Rev. Dr. Ted Land officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, with the Desoto County Honor Guard conducting services. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in Charles' name to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or American Cancer Society, 992 Tamiami Trail, Unit C-2, Port Charlotte, FL 33953.
