Charles Lamar
Shackelford
February 8, 1934 – November 19, 2022
Charles Lamar Shackelford of Wauchula, FL went to his eternal heavenly home on November 19, 2022.
Born February 8, 1934 in Wauchula, Florida, to the late Lonnie and Annie Laurie Shackelford, he joined a family of three brothers - Hinton, Clyde "Shug" and Terry Shackelford.
Known by many names – "Chuck", "Charley", and "Punk", his high school year book described him well: Twinkling eyes… a winning smile for everyone…in the field… mischievous…always wanting to go…to get out of school… fun!
Graduating from Hardee High School in 1952, he attended the University of Florida, pledging Alpha Gamma Rho, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He served in the Army for 18 months and while stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri he eyed his future wife, who ultimately agreed to marry him if a move to Wauchula was not part of the package. They married in January 1960 in Tallahassee where he worked as a county extension agent. They ultimately moved to Wauchula when he was recruited by Wauchula State Bank to be its ag lender. Within a few years, he became the father of two girls, Lesley and Luci. Together their family attended and served at First Baptist Church of Wauchula to ensure that their lives were built on faith and a love for God. The Federal Land Bank (now Farm Credit) recruited him as its president in 1969. He later purchased the OK Tire Store, obtained his real estate license and opened Charles L. Shackelford Realty.
He had the honor of serving the community in many ways - Florida Citrus Mutual Board, Hardee County Farm Bureau president, lifetime member and president of the Lion's Club, founding member of board of directors of Highlands Independent Bank.
He had a love for the outdoors and shared his passion of hunting and fishing with his daughters, also allowing them the joy of working in the pastures and groves. Friends and family benefitted from his culinary skills, especially his perfectly cooked steaks and beef tenderloin.
Upon retirement, he and his wife Peggy enjoyed spending summers at their home at Wildcat Cliffs Country Club in Highlands, North Carolina, where they learned to play golf and croquet, becoming the club's first croquet doubles champion.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Edwards Shackelford, of 61 years and leaves behind his daughters Lesley Shackelford Bateman (Rick), granddaughters Lauren and Megan Bateman of Pensacola and Plant City; Luci Shackelford Coker (Keith), and grandson Ashton Coker of Winter Springs; beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Marcus Shackelford will preside over the service at First Baptist Wauchula, Sunday, November 27, 2022, with visitation beginning at 2:30 pm, service at 3 pm followed by an appetizer and dessert reception in the fellowship hall. The service will be livestreamed at https://www.fbcwauchula.org/ and recorded for viewing at a later time.
The family would like to thank its in-home caregiver Cindy Cook for her compassionate care and ever-present help for more than seven years, Advent Health Wauchula, Good Shepherd Hospice, and the many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins who regularly called, brought food and stopped by for visits, especially in his later years.
