Bette Lou Sandstrom Bumgarner, age 79, passed away Jan. 18, 2008 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, FL from a brief illness. Lou was born Oct. 23, 1928 in Sycamore, IL. and had lived in Arcadia for the past 29 years, moving here from St. Charles, IL. Lou was an astute business woman. She and her husband Roger owned and operated a plumbing and heating business in St. Charles for several years. Later, she and her family opened three motorcycle stores, in St. Charles, Aurora, and Elgin. IL. She kept those stores up and running from the early 1950 s until the late 1970 s. Upon arriving in Arcadia in 1979, Lou, needing something to do, coaxed Roger into buying the Hi-Way Motel, south of Arcadia. The two of them ran the motel for several years, before finally deciding to retire. Lou was always an entrepreneur. As a small child, she would buy cigarette by the carton to sell to her father and save the coupons, to be redeemed for gifts. Lou was a volunteer for the V.F.W Peace River Post #2824, a life member of the D.A.V Ladies Auxiliary, Arcadia, FL and a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11. Lou was a very loving and kind person and her purpose in life was to share that love and kindness to anyone and everyone who would accept it. She and her husband Roger traveled extensively around the world. Lou was of the Methodist faith. Survivors are her beloved husband, Roger, two sons, Tim (Valerie) Bumgarner, Arcadia, Thomas Tom (Connie) Bumgarner, St. Charles, IL. two daughters, Susan (Joe) Daniel, Arcadia and Kathy (Steven) Wilson, St, Charles, IL. Lou also leaves a sister Ruth Ann (Bernie) Osterland, Warrenville, IL and a brother-in-law Don Anderson, Batavia, IL,.Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Aimee Sandstrom, a son, Michael, a granddaughter Paula Sparks, and sister, Jeanne Anderson. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same; It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, our chain will link again.
