Alice Muriel Bowe Carter, 87, of Arcadia, Florida, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

While Alice came across mild-mannered, she was tough as nails. Alice grew up in a three-room house on a mountaintop near Rosina, West Virginia, affectionately known as the homeplace. The youngest of seven children, she was well looked after and told stories about searching for ramps (onions) in the forest with her sisters. At age 21, Alice made a bold move and joined the United States Navy. She worked as a teletype operator and was stationed in San Diego, California, where she met her future husband, Maxie. In 1956, the Navy could discharge women for being married, so Alice traded in her stripes for her new role as wife and, eventually, mother to four children. When they settled in Arcadia, Florida, Alice began a career with the US Postal Service and retired after 20 years as a rural mail carrier. She loved baking cookies, reading, working puzzles, feeding the birds and was absolutely devoted to her cats known as Fat Cat and The Other One.

Alice is survived by her sons, Michael Carter (Lavenia), Marcus Carter (Liesl), and Monte Carter (Valerie), as well as her four beloved grandchildren Kristen Riley, Megan Riley, Maxwell Carter, and Esme Carter, and great-grandchild, Riley Owen.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Maxie Harold Carter and by her daughter Michelle Carter Riley. In accordance with her wishes, the family will celebrate her life privately and inurnment will be at Joshua Creek Cemetery.
